A primary care physician is a doctor who provides a patient with the treatment of any undiagnosed health concern. He also provides simultaneous care of different medical conditions.

A PCP (Primary Care Physician) is your main doctor who deals with most of your diseases and health-related issues. In the past, these doctors were also called general practitioners or family doctors.

What PCPs Do?

The PCPs are the general doctors to whom you can address all your health-related problems. If you have a more complex problem that your primary care physician cannot handle so, your PCP will tell you to visit a specialist. You may also see your primary care physician for a monthly checkup.

 How to Become a PCP?

Primary care physicians provide initial diagnoses and help in different diseases. Any person who wants to be a successful PCP must be ready to go through expensive and lengthy studies. It usually takes 11 to 15 years to become a primary care physician. Once an individual is enrolled in an undergraduate program of four years, a primary care physician usually takes courses related to the human body.

It usually takes four years to complete medical school. 

What Types of Doctors can be PCPs?

There are many different types of doctors who can do the job for example:


Pediatricians are the doctors that look after the health-related problems of a child. A pediatrician can be your children’s primary care physician.

Family Practitioner:

A family practitioner (FP) is a family doctor who has completed three years of medical school and studied family medicine. They take care of adults, kids, and older people.

Internal Medicine Doctors:

These doctors have received three years of education from medical school and are specialists in medicines for older people—internal Medicine Doctors.

Primary healthcare also provides the treatment to people not specifically of any one disease but are specialists in treating chronic diseases and primary care physicians also help people with undiagnosed diseases and other unexpected diseases that occur suddenly.
